George Mason University 'Forty under 40' Honoree


The George Mason University Forty under 40 Honors, created by the Black Alumni Chapter, recognizes and celebrates outstanding alumni for their professional and community achievements, in addition to contributions to Mason through their time, talents, and treasures.

Gary Bushrod has been named as an honoree for the inaugural class. Since graduating from George Mason University’s Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) program in 2014 with a Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction, Gary has not only achieved significant accomplishments in his career as a Learning & Development leader, he has mentored dozens of children during his tenure as Coach and Artistic Director of the Herndon High Step Team, being named two-time national champions and Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013, respectively. In addition to this, he is the former Chair of Education for the Omicron Lambda Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He is the creator and curator of, a travel & lifestyle blog meant to inspire young professionals to see the world. In 2008, Gary served as a panelist, representing his undergraduate institution, Hampton University at the annual White House Initiative on HBCUs conference. Serving as the Vice President of the Washington, DC chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Gary presented on proposed solutions for engaging recent HBCU graduates in their local alumni programs. In October 2018, Gary was also inducted into Hampton University’s Forty under 40 Society.

Relocating from Herndon, Virginia to New York City in September of 2014, Gary took a a role as Program Manager of Risk Management & Compliance Learning & Development with JPMorgan Chase & Co. Now, he is serving as a Learning Consultant with Capital One’s Commercial Bank.

The 2019 class of Mason’s Forty Under 40 Honors will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2019. At that time, the Black Alumni Chapter and guests of the honorees will highlight some of what they recognize as the university’s best and brightest Black Alumni.
